Choosing a Hosting Company

When choosing a hosting company, price is not all you need to consider. You also need to think about what features you need for the project you plan to work on, the amount of space and bandwidth they provide, and whether they can assure against downtime.

E-mail support and ask a simple question and see how long it takes them to answer you. That’s always a good indication of the service you’ll get later. If they’re not fast and friendly to a potential customer they’ll be even worse to someone who’s been with them for a while.

It’s always a clever idea to check around and not just jump on the first hosting provider that tells you they’re going to give you a good deal. If possible, talk to a few people who use the services and find out how long they’ve been using them and if they’re satisfied.

If they offer an outlandish amount of space or unlimited e-mails or anything that sounds too good to be true, be careful. Some hosts will offer a lot but only deliver a little because they figure if you see that they offer so much for the price you’ll pay a high price for it whether you need the space or not.

Now moving on…

Do you need dedicated hosting for a small website? Do you need 100 email accounts? Unless you’re working for a large company, you don’t, so there’s no sense in paying for it. Most reputable hosting companies will be more than happy to help you decide what you need and won’t try to sell you more than that.

Unless you plan on selling hosting plans yourself, you only need enough space for your main domain site and a few subdomains and databases for things like a guestbook, a forum, or blog, or whatever. You might need up to three email addresses for targeted emails such as sales, support, or admin.

Your hosting provider should also be flexible enough if you contact them and ask for more space or more email addresses or whatever later, they’ll be willing to provide them for you without a lot of extra cost. Make sure you read the fine print before you buy hosting.

Some companies will penalize you if you change your mind later and require that you make provisions for extra space or bandwidth at the beginning of your contract. They may allow you to pay an exceedingly small fee to keep your site from being tagged for going over bandwidth which is usually only a few dollars and is a one-time fee, but some may charge monthly for this. Note: this does not occur with Wealthy Affiliate.

Newer isn’t always better either. A new host may just be a reseller and not have the support in place or be able to help you if there’s a problem. Look for an experienced hosting provider who knows their way around the tools and can support you when you need help.

You can always check the who is database on the domain name for the hosting provider to see how long it’s been active. If it’s less than a few months, it might be a promising idea to look elsewhere.
