Webmaster Tips and Tricks
Building Your Website
Building your first website can be a very rewarding experience but can also be a little intimidating at first. But with good instruction and the right tools it can be a lot easier to do. Just take it easy and don’t try to do too much all at once. Rome wasn’t built in a day and a quality website takes time to build too.
Before you start building it’s a good idea to get your tools together and start practicing their use. First of all a good easy to use FTP program is a must if you’re going to be uploading a lot of images and html files.
If your hosting plan comes with cpanel x, you can upload files from your file manager, but you can only do one click at a time and it can be time consuming if you’re uploading a lot of files.
FTP will help you to upload all the files and even entire folders at once. So, start by getting a good reliable one that you can use for the first time with ease. One I recommend is FTP Commander. You can get a free trial for thirty days before you decide to buy it.
And even if you decide not to buy it, it will help you to learn how to use them and you can always try something else later on. To download FTP Commander, go to http://www.internet-soft.com and get the free trial version of FTP Commander Pro. Your host will give you the address to use for the ftp account, but it’s normally ftp.yourdomain.com and the username and password you use when you log into your cpanel.
So, in your FTP Commander just click on file, then new server, and type this information in to get started. On one side of the software you’ll see your computer files where you can navigate to find your documents, your picture folders, etc. and on the other side you can see the site files on your web host.
You can use your Microsoft office tools or frontpage or other html editor to write the text and place images on the page for your site and save it to html. Your first page, or the page that will show when you go to your domain name should be saved as index.html or index.htm and be uploaded to your Public HTML folder before it will show as a live page.
Use your ftp program to navigate to the files on your computer that you want to send to your site, and then on the server side, just navigate to the Public HTML folder by double clicking and once open, you can simply highlight all the files you want to send and click the arrow that points toward the server side to send the files there.
If you don’t already have one, you might want to make a directory in your site files for images. Just name the folder “images” and send all your image files there.
Then once your index.htm or index.html file is in place whatever images you have on the page will need to be edited in the code to show the correct path. Right click the file in your ftp program and choose “edit” and edit the code to include the path to the “images/filename”.
In other words, if you have a picture on your page called “horses.jpg” and it’s in your images folder you set up in your Public HTML folder, you’ll just need to change the path in the index.html file to “images/horses.jpg” instead of “my documents/my_pictures.etc…”
One way of doing this quickly is to open the page in notepad and use “edit/find and replace”, then type in the first blank the path to the images on your computer, then in the second blank type “images/” then check “replace all” and wherever there’s an image that’s coming from that folder that needs to be changed to the images folder on your site, it will change them all at once. This is a big-time saver you’ll use a lot once you get accustomed to how it works.
If you feel too intimidated to use the ftp software, you can also just login to your cPanel and go to file manager. From there you can navigate to your Public HTML or www folder and click on create a folder, or create a file to make your html files, then open them with your wysiwyg editor or html editor.
Always remember to click the icons for the files and folders when you want to open them and click the names if you just want to view or make changes to the properties.
Don’t worry about breaking anything, just remember to save changes when you’re done or the changes you make won’t be saved. If you make a mistake, just exit out without saving and nothing will happen.
If you’re new to all this, and don’t know the first thing about how to capture images or save webpages, just keep reading. I’ll be giving you tips on this in a later chapter.
